Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Tour
Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Tour — Drive Into Nepal's Last Forbidden Kingdom
Some places in the world still feel genuinely untouched. Upper Mustang is one of them.
This isn't a typical Nepal tour. There are no crowds, no tea stalls every 200 metres, and no sign of the modern world once you pass Kagbeni's ancient gate. What you will find is a high-altitude desert that looks more like Tibet than Nepal — red cliffs carved with thousand-year-old caves, whitewashed walled villages, and monasteries whose butter lamps have been burning for six centuries.
Our Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Tour gets you there in 11 days, entirely by private Land Cruiser. No trekking fitness required. Suitable for families, seniors, and anyone who wants to experience one of Nepal's most extraordinary restricted regions in genuine comfort.
We handle every permit, every meal on the road, and every logistical detail — so you just look out the window and absorb one of the most extraordinary landscapes on earth.
Why the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour Is Different From Everything Else in Nepal
Most Nepal tours follow the same circuit: Kathmandu temples, Pokhara lake, maybe a flight to Everest. The Upper Mustang jeep tour goes somewhere those crowds never reach.
Here's why travellers who have done both say Mustang stays with them longer:
You are entering a restricted area. Upper Mustang requires a Special Restricted Area Permit — only a few thousand tourists are allowed each year. That permit is not a bureaucratic hassle; it's the reason the place still looks the way it does. The low visitor numbers are precisely what make it special.
The landscape is unlike anything else in Nepal. Below Kagbeni you have green Himalayan foothills. Cross the checkpoint and the world changes instantly — bone-dry valleys, eroded ochre cliffs, pale blue sky, and mountain silhouettes that go on forever. Annapurna to your left, Dhaulagiri to your right, the Kali Gandaki gorge — the deepest gorge on earth — cutting between them.
The culture is living, not museumified. Lo Manthang's walled city has around 1,300 residents who still follow Tibetan Buddhist traditions unchanged for centuries. The monasteries are active, the festivals are real, and the king's palace is still the king's palace.
The jeep gets you there without trekking. The Upper Mustang trek takes 12 to 16 days on foot. Our Upper Mustang overland tour covers the same ground in 11 days by 4WD, with short walks at the sites that matter — monasteries, sky caves, the walled city. It's the same experience, accessible to anyone.

A note on the 2026 permit change
Good news for 2026 travellers: Nepal's government replaced the old flat USD 500 permit (mandatory for 10 days minimum) with a flexible USD 50 per person per day system. You now pay only for the days you actually spend inside the restricted area. For our 11-day itinerary, that means roughly 8 days inside the zone — a total permit cost of USD 400 per person, which is already included in your tour price.
Upper Mustang Tour from Pokhara — Your 11-Day Itinerary
The mustang nepal overland tour begins and ends in Kathmandu, with the jeep journey starting from Pokhara — Nepal's most relaxed city, sitting beneath Annapurna's south face.
cost, and what they cover:
1. Restricted Area Permit (RAP) — USD 50 per person per day
This is the main permit. Upper Mustang sits on Nepal's border with Tibet and has been a controlled zone since 1992. The RAP covers your entry from Kagbeni northward into the restricted area. Under the new 2026 rule, you pay only for the days you spend inside — so an 8-day stay costs USD 400 per person. The permit can only be issued through a licensed Nepali trekking agency (like us) — you cannot obtain it independently.
2. ACAP — Annapurna Conservation Area Permit
This covers the broader Annapurna Conservation Area, which Lower Mustang falls within. Cost: USD 30 per person.
3. TIMS — Trekkers' Information Management System
A standard trekking registration card required for all routes in Nepal. Cost: USD 20 per person.
We arrange all three permits for you. You don't need to visit any government office or queue anywhere. Bring passport photos and a copy of your passport's ID page — we handle the rest.
Important: The restricted area requires a minimum group of two people and a licensed guide at all times. Solo travellers are welcome — we can pair you with another traveller for the permit if needed.
Lo Manthang Jeep Tour — What to Expect at the Walled City
Lo Manthang is the reason people come to Upper Mustang. It's a medieval walled city at 3,840m that has been continuously inhabited since the 14th century. Walking through its gate feels genuinely like stepping into another era.
What you'll see inside Lo Manthang:
The city covers roughly 1 square kilometre inside its walls. There are four major monasteries — Jampa Gompa is the oldest and most significant, founded in 1387. Its interior holds rare murals and thangka paintings that have been restored by art conservationists from around the world. Thubchen Gompa is the largest, with a 10-metre gilded statue of Maitreya (the future Buddha) that takes your breath away the first time you see it.
The King's Palace sits at the northern end of the city. Lo Manthang's king no longer governs politically, but the family still lives here and the building remains a living piece of Mustang's royal history.
Outside the walls, the sky caves of Chhoser are a 20-minute drive away. These cliff-face caverns — some accessible only by ancient rope ladders — were home to a mysterious civilisation that vanished thousands of years ago. Archaeological expeditions here in the last two decades have found manuscripts, weapons, and human remains dating back over 3,000 years.
What to Pack for the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour
The jeep does the hard work, but you'll still stand outside in wind at 4,200m. Here's what you need:
Clothing
Warm fleece or down jacket (essential — even in May, passes are cold)
Windproof outer layer
Thermal base layer for evenings in Mustang lodges
Comfortable trekking trousers for short walks at sites
Sunhat and sunglasses (the desert plateau sun is intense)
Warm gloves and a wool hat for passes
Documents
Passport + 2 passport-sized photos (for permits)
Travel insurance documents — evacuation coverage is mandatory
Nepal visa (USD 30 for 15 days / USD 50 for 30 days)
Health & wellness
Personal first aid kit
Diamox (acetazolamide) — consult your doctor before travel; useful for high-pass crossings
Rehydration salts
Lip balm and strong sunscreen (SPF 50+) — the altitude and dry air combined will crack your lips and burn your skin faster than you expect
Personal prescription medications in sufficient supply
Other essentials
Camera with extra memory cards and a spare battery (cold drains batteries fast)
Power bank
Earplugs (lodge walls are thin)
Small daypack for walks at sites
USD cash — ATMs don't exist above Jomsom
Altitude on the Upper Mustang Overland Tour
One of the most common questions we receive: "Do I need to worry about altitude on a jeep tour?"
The honest answer is: less than on a trek, but not zero.
The highest point you'll reach is Syangboche Pass at 4,200m, crossed entirely by vehicle on Day 5. You spend nights between 2,743m (Jomsom) and 3,840m (Lo Manthang). For context, that's similar to the altitude of Namche Bazaar on the Everest trek, but reached more quickly.
Symptoms to watch for: Headache, mild nausea, fatigue, and disrupted sleep are normal at altitude and usually pass within 24 hours as your body acclimatises. These are not emergencies.
When to be concerned: Persistent vomiting, loss of coordination, severe headache that doesn't improve with rest, or breathlessness at rest are signs to descend immediately and contact your guide.
Our guide is your first line of safety. Every guide we employ is trained in altitude awareness and knows the evacuation routes. Travel insurance with helicopter evacuation coverage is mandatory for this tour — not because emergencies are common, but because if one happens, you want to be covered. In remote Upper Mustang, a helicopter evacuation costs USD 3,000–5,000 without insurance.
Food and Accommodation on the Upper Mustang Tour
In Kathmandu and Pokhara: We use comfortable 3-star hotels. You'll have a private room with en-suite bathroom, hot water, WiFi, and a proper bed. Breakfast is included. For lunches and dinners in the cities, we recommend the local restaurant scene — Kathmandu and Pokhara both have excellent dining at every price point.
On the road (Mustang segment): We use the best available lodges in each village. Accommodation in Upper Mustang has improved dramatically in the last decade. Most lodges now offer private rooms with attached bathrooms, clean bedding, and 24-hour electricity from solar. By European standards it's simple. By Himalayan standards it's perfectly comfortable.
Meals on the Mustang segment: Full board is included — breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. Typical meals are dal bhat (the Nepali staple of lentil soup with rice and vegetables), noodles, momos (dumplings), omelettes, and local bread. In Lo Manthang, some lodges now serve excellent Tibetan-influenced food. The apple products from Marpha — brandy, juice, dried apples — are a Mustang institution worth sampling.
One practical note: there are no ATMs above Jomsom. Bring all the cash you'll need for personal expenses before leaving Pokhara.
Why Choose Global Nepal Treks for Your Upper Mustang Jeep Tour?
We are a government-licensed Nepali travel agency (licence no. 3058) with over 15 years of operating tours in Nepal. Our team has guided hundreds of travellers through Upper Mustang's restricted zone — including families with children as young as eight, travellers in their seventies, and everyone in between.
Here's what that experience translates into for you:
We know the road. Our drivers have driven the Pokhara–Lo Manthang route in every season and every condition. They know where to stop for the best views, which stretches require extra care in wet weather, and which passes are clear.
Our guides are locals. Several members of our guiding team grew up in the Mustang region. They know the monastery custodians, they speak both Nepali and Mustangi, and they can take you into corners of Lo Manthang that tour groups from Kathmandu simply never see.
We handle permits the right way. The restricted area permit process requires a licensed agency. We have been arranging these permits since Upper Mustang opened to tourism. We have never had a permit rejected or a client turned back at the checkpoint.
Our groups stay small. Maximum 10 people per group. In practice, most of our Upper Mustang tours run with 2–6 travellers. You're not on a bus tour.
We are transparent about costs. Everything on our price table above is what you'll actually pay. No surprise fees at the checkpoint, no "optional" charges that turn out to be mandatory.

How much does the Upper Mustang jeep tour permit cost? Under Nepal's new 2026 permit system, the Restricted Area Permit costs USD 50 per person per day inside the restricted zone. For our itinerary (approximately 8 days inside the restricted area), that totals USD 400 per person. This is already included in your tour price. ACAP (USD 30) and TIMS (USD 20) are also included.
What physical fitness do I need for the Upper Mustang 4WD tour? None beyond basic mobility. The entire journey is by jeep, with short walks of 15–45 minutes at monasteries, sky caves, and viewpoints. We've run this tour with participants aged 8 to 74. If you can walk comfortably on uneven ground for up to an hour, you can do this tour.
Can I do the Upper Mustang jeep tour solo? The restricted area permit requires a minimum of two people. If you're travelling solo, contact us — we can match you with another solo traveller to meet the permit requirement, or in some cases arrange a permit through our licensed group permit. Solo travellers pay a small supplement.
What is the best time for the Upper Mustang jeep tour from Pokhara? Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the classic seasons. May 13–15, 2026 is Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang — if you can arrange your trip around those dates, it adds an extraordinary dimension to the experience. Upper Mustang is also one of the few places in Nepal you can visit during the monsoon (June–August) due to its rain-shadow location.
Is altitude sickness a risk on the Upper Mustang overland tour? Mild altitude symptoms (headache, fatigue) are possible, particularly on the day you cross Syangboche Pass (4,200m) and during your nights in Lo Manthang (3,840m). These usually resolve with rest and hydration. Your guide monitors the group throughout. We recommend consulting your doctor about Diamox before travel. Mandatory travel insurance with helicopter evacuation coverage provides the safety net in the unlikely event of serious altitude illness.
What is the accommodation like in Upper Mustang? Twin-sharing rooms with attached bathrooms in the best available lodges in each village. Lodges in Lo Manthang have improved significantly — hot showers (solar-heated), 24-hour electricity, and clean bedding are standard. It is simple by city standards but comfortable for the environment. We use hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara.
Can I visit the Tiji Festival during the Upper Mustang jeep tour? Yes. The Tiji Festival in 2026 falls on May 13–15 in Lo Manthang. We offer a dedicated Tiji Festival departure that times your stay in Lo Manthang to coincide with all three days of the ceremony. Contact us for the May 2026 Tiji-aligned itinerary.
What is included in the Upper Mustang restricted area tour package? All permits (RAP, ACAP, TIMS), private 4WD vehicle and driver, English-speaking licensed guide, all meals on the Mustang segment, hotel and lodge accommodation throughout, domestic flights (Pokhara–Kathmandu both ways), and all airport/hotel transfers.
How far is Lo Manthang from Pokhara by jeep? Lo Manthang is approximately 200km from Pokhara by road, crossing Syangboche Pass (4,200m). The drive takes roughly two full days — Pokhara to Tatopani (Day 1), Tatopani through Kagbeni to Ghami (Day 2), and Ghami to Lo Manthang (Day 3 from Pokhara). The road is rough in sections but navigable year-round in a 4WD vehicle.
