Almost nobody knows about it.
The Khopra Ridge Trek reaches 3,660m and visits the sacred Khayer Lake at 4,500m — a glacial lake considered holy in Hindu tradition and visited by pilgrims for centuries. In peak October season you might share the trail with 20–30 other trekkers. On the Annapurna Base Camp route at the same time there are 300–400.

What Is the Khopra Ridge Trek?
The Khopra Ridge Trek is a 8–10 day moderate trekking route in the Annapurna Conservation Area of Nepal. It starts and ends in Pokhara, passes through traditional Gurung villages including Ghandruk and Chhomrong, climbs through rhododendron and oak forests to the Khopra Ridge (3,660m), and optionally continues to the sacred Khayer Lake (4,500m).
What makes it unique:
Unlike the standard Annapurna Base Camp Trek — which follows the busy Modi Khola Valley — the Khopra Ridge route branches west onto an uncrowded ridge with panoramic views that rival anything on the ABC or EBC routes.
From Khopra Ridge (3,660m) you can see:

Why Khopra Ridge Is Special — 5 Reasons
1. Zero crowds compared to Annapurna Base Camp
The ABC route is Nepal's most popular moderate trek. In October peak season it carries 300–400 trekkers per day on the main trail sections.
The Khopra Ridge route branches away from the main trail at Chhomrong. From that point the crowd level drops dramatically. I have guided Khopra Ridge in October and seen entire ridge sections with nobody else visible — just mountains and silence.
For trekkers who love the Annapurna region but want to escape the crowds of ABC — Khopra Ridge is the answer.
2. Outstanding Dhaulagiri views
Most Annapurna region treks give you Annapurna and Machhapuchhre as the dominant peaks. Khopra Ridge adds something special — close, dramatic views of Dhaulagiri (8,167m) to the west.
From Khopra Ridge the Dhaulagiri massif dominates the western horizon in a way that is impossible to appreciate from the busy Modi Khola Valley of the standard ABC route. This combination of Dhaulagiri west and Annapurna east — visible simultaneously — is genuinely extraordinary.
3. Khayer Lake — sacred and remote
The optional extension from Khopra Ridge to Khayer Lake (4,500m) adds one extra day and takes you to one of the most sacred lakes in the Annapurna region.
Khayer Lake sits in a glacial cirque at 4,500m. Hindu pilgrims visit it during the Janai Purnima festival — a full moon celebration in July or August. The lake is dedicated to Lord Shiva and considered highly auspicious.
Even outside festival season the lake has a powerful atmosphere. The high-altitude setting, the surrounding peaks, and the complete absence of tourist infrastructure make it feel genuinely remote and sacred.
4. Traditional Gurung villages
The Khopra Ridge route passes through some of the most authentic Gurung villages in the Annapurna region — Ghandruk, Chhomrong, and smaller settlements above Chhomrong that most ABC trekkers never see.
The Gurung people are one of Nepal's most distinctive indigenous communities — known for their military service in the British Gurkha regiments, their warm hospitality, and their Buddhist-Hindu religious traditions. Walking through these villages with a guide who speaks Gurung and knows the families is a cultural experience that cannot be replicated on the busier ABC trail below.

Khopra Ridge Trek Full Itinerary 2026 — 9 Days
Day 1 — Arrive Kathmandu (1,400m)
Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport. Transfer to Thamel hotel. Welcome dinner and trek briefing with your guide. Permit collection.
Day 2 — Fly or Drive to Pokhara (820m)
Fly to Pokhara (25 minutes, $80–120) or drive (6–7 hours by tourist bus or private jeep). Afternoon at leisure — Phewa Lake, Sarangkot viewpoint, lakeside restaurants.
Day 3 — Pokhara → Ghandruk (1,940m)
Drive to Nayapul (1.5 hours) then trek 5–6 hours through terraced rice fields and traditional Gurung villages. Arrive Ghandruk — one of the largest and most beautifully maintained Gurung villages in the Annapurna region. First clear views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre.
Cultural highlight: Ghandruk has an excellent Gurung culture museum — worth 1 hour to understand the community history and Gurkha military tradition.
Day 4 — Ghandruk → Chhomrong (2,170m)
Trek 4–5 hours through forests and across the Modi Khola river. Chhomrong sits on a dramatic ridge with outstanding Machhapuchhre views. This is where the standard ABC route continues straight into the Annapurna Sanctuary — the Khopra route branches west here.
Day 5 — Chhomrong → Khopra Ridge Camp (3,660m)
Trek 6–7 hours climbing steeply through rhododendron and oak forest onto the Khopra Ridge. This is the most demanding day — but the views as you emerge from the forest onto the open ridge are extraordinary.
First dramatic Dhaulagiri views appear as you gain the ridge. Annapurna and Machhapuchhre visible to the east. Nilgiri to the north.
This is the highlight day. The Khopra Ridge camp sits in an exceptional location — you watch sunset over Dhaulagiri and sunrise over the Annapurna range from the same spot.
Day 6 — Khopra Ridge → Khayer Lake (4,500m) → Khopra Camp
Optional day hike to the sacred Khayer Lake at 4,500m. Trek 3–4 hours from camp to the lake and back.
The lake sits in a glacial cirque enclosed by high ridges. The trail passes through alpine meadows with grazing yaks and small stone herder shelters. The lake itself — turquoise, sacred, completely silent — is one of the most peaceful places I have visited in 18 years of guiding Nepal.
Return to Khopra Ridge camp for overnight.

Day 7 — Khopra Ridge → Swanta (2,200m)
Descent from the ridge via a different route through Swanta village — a small traditional settlement rarely visited by trekkers. Overnight at Swanta tea house.
Day 8 — Swanta → Ghandruk → Nayapul → Pokhara
Morning trek back through Ghandruk then descend to Nayapul. Drive 1.5 hours to Pokhara. Afternoon at leisure in Pokhara.
Day 9 — Pokhara → Kathmandu → Departure

Khopra Ridge Trek Difficulty
Difficulty: Moderate
Maximum altitude: 4,500m (Khayer Lake optional) or 3,660m (Khopra Ridge only)
The difficulty is similar to the Annapurna Base Camp Trek — the maximum standard altitude of 3,660m is lower than ABC's 4,130m, making this one of the more altitude-friendly Annapurna routes.
What makes it challenging:
Day 5 — Chhomrong to Khopra Ridge — 6–7 hours with significant elevation gain through forest
The trail above Chhomrong is less maintained than the main ABC route
Tea house facilities become more basic above Chhomrong
What makes it manageable:
Maximum standard altitude 3,660m — no extreme altitude challenge

Best Time for Khopra Ridge Trek 2026
Spring — March to May ✅
April is best. The rhododendron forests between Ghandruk and Chhomrong and up to the ridge are spectacular in full bloom. Pink, red, and white blooms carpet the hillsides. Stable weather. Clear mountain views.
March — blooms beginning at lower altitude, stable weather, less crowded.
May — late blooms at higher altitude, some afternoon cloud building.
Autumn — September to November ✅
October is best. Post-monsoon crystal clear skies give the sharpest Dhaulagiri and Annapurna views of the year. Stable weather throughout. Perfect temperatures.
November — still excellent views, getting cold at ridge camp altitude.
Monsoon — June to August ❌
Heavy rain, leeches on lower trail sections. Not recommended for Khopra Ridge.
Winter — December to February 🟡
Cold at ridge camp altitude — temperatures drop to -5°C to -10°C at night. Snow possible on the ridge. Excellent for experienced cold-weather trekkers who want complete solitude.

Q: Is Khopra Ridge Trek suitable for beginners?
Yes — with moderate fitness preparation. The maximum standard altitude of 3,660m is very manageable. Day 5 (Chhomrong to Khopra Ridge) is demanding but within reach of any trekker who has done basic hiking preparation. We recommend the EBC Trek for beginners training plan as preparation guidance.
Q: Is Khayer Lake dangerous to reach?
No — the trail from Khopra Ridge to Khayer Lake is a 3–4 hour day hike at altitude. The trail is clear and our guides are very familiar with the route. The altitude (4,500m) requires good acclimatization — we recommend spending 2 nights at Khopra Ridge before attempting the lake.
Q: Can I see Annapurna Base Camp from Khopra Ridge?
No — Khopra Ridge is on the west side of the Modi Khola Valley. The Annapurna Sanctuary is visible in the distance but the ABC base camp itself is not visible. Khopra Ridge gives exceptional views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, and Machhapuchhre — different from but equally impressive as the views from inside the sanctuary.
Q: What is the Janai Purnima festival at Khayer Lake?
Janai Purnima is a major Hindu festival celebrated on the full moon of the Nepali month of Shrawan (usually July or August). Thousands of Hindu pilgrims trek to Khayer Lake to take a sacred dip and change the sacred thread (janai) worn by Hindu men. If your trek coincides with this festival — the cultural experience of the pilgrimage is extraordinary.
Q: Do I need a guide for Khopra Ridge Trek?
Yes — since April 2023 a licensed guide is mandatory on all Annapurna Conservation Area trekking routes including Khopra Ridge. Global Nepal Treks includes a licensed NTB guide in all packages.
Q: How far is Khopra Ridge from Pokhara?
The trailhead at Nayapul is approximately 1.5 hours drive from Pokhara. From Nayapul the trek to Ghandruk takes 5–6 hours. Khopra Ridge is reached on Day 5 of the standard itinerary — approximately 4–5 days of trekking from Pokhara.
Q: Is Khopra Ridge better than Poon Hill?
Different experience. Poon Hill (3,210m) is more accessible — 4–5 days from Pokhara — with the famous pre-dawn sunrise. Khopra Ridge (3,660m) takes longer but gives higher altitude, better Dhaulagiri views, fewer crowds, and the unique Khayer Lake experience. For trekkers who have done Poon Hill and want a bigger challenge — Khopra Ridge is the natural next step.
