Mardi Himal Trek 2026 — Close-Up Views of Machhapuchhre With Almost No Crowds
Introduction
Most trekkers in the Annapurna region follow one of two routes — Annapurna Base Camp or Poon Hill. Both are outstanding. Both are also crowded.
The Mardi Himal Trek takes a different path. It branches east from the standard Annapurna approach onto a ridge that most trekkers walk right past — delivering close-up views of Machhapuchhre (the sacred Fishtail Mountain at 6,993m) that are simply not available on any other Annapurna route.
I am Saroj Ghimire, Director of Global Nepal Treks (Govt Licence No. 3058, Kathmandu). We added the Mardi Himal Trek to our programme because it offers something genuinely different from the crowded main trails — extraordinary mountain views on a route that still feels like a genuine discovery.
Quick facts:
Duration: 9 days
Maximum altitude: 4,500m (Mardi Himal Base Camp)
Difficulty: Moderate
Price: From $680 per person all-inclusive
Best time: March–May and September–November
Crowd level: Very low
What Makes Mardi Himal Trek Unique
The closest views of Machhapuchhre anywhere in Nepal
Machhapuchhre — the Fishtail Mountain — is one of Nepal’s most iconic peaks. Sacred and permanently closed to climbers, its distinctive twin-summit shape is visible from Pokhara and throughout the Annapurna region.
On the standard ABC route you see Machhapuchhre from the Modi Khola Valley — beautiful but distant. From the Mardi Himal Trek ridge at 4,000–4,500m you are directly beside the mountain’s eastern flanks. The scale and proximity are overwhelming in a way photographs cannot capture.
In 18 years of guiding Annapurna routes this is one of the few places where I consistently see experienced trekkers stop walking simply because the view requires their full attention.
Genuine solitude
The Mardi Himal route was officially opened as a trekking destination relatively recently compared to ABC and Poon Hill. Despite this, it remains remarkably uncrowded.
On a busy October day the main ABC trail carries 300–400 trekkers. The Mardi Himal ridge on the same day might see 30–50.
Dense rhododendron forests
The trail from Pokhara through Forest Camp and Low Camp passes through some of the finest rhododendron forests in the Annapurna Conservation Area. In spring (March–April) the blooms are spectacular — pink, red, and white flowers covering hillsides above 2,500m.
The High Camp ridge walk
The section from Low Camp to High Camp (4,200m) follows an open ridge with unobstructed views on both sides — Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range to the west, Himalayan foothills and the Pokhara Valley far below to the south. This ridge walk is the finest section of the entire route.

Frequently Asked Questions — Mardi Himal Trek 2026
Q: Is Mardi Himal Trek suitable for beginners?
Yes with good fitness preparation. The maximum altitude of 4,500m is manageable and no prior high-altitude experience is required. The most demanding day is Low Camp to High Camp — 5–6 hours with significant elevation gain. Three months of regular hiking preparation is recommended.
Q: Do I need a guide for Mardi Himal Trek?
Yes — since April 2023 a licensed guide is mandatory on all Annapurna Conservation Area trekking routes. Global Nepal Treks includes a licensed NTB guide in all packages. See our Nepal trekking without a guide 2026 guide for full details.
Q: Why is Machhapuchhre called Fishtail Mountain?
The name comes from the mountain’s distinctive twin-summit ridge which resembles a fish tail when viewed from certain angles — particularly from Pokhara and the Modi Khola Valley. The mountain is sacred in Hindu tradition and permanently closed to climbing — no expedition has ever been permitted to reach its summit.
Q: Can I combine Mardi Himal with Annapurna Base Camp?
Yes — a combined Mardi Himal + ABC itinerary is possible in 16–18 days. This gives you both the close ridge views of Machhapuchhre from the Mardi Himal route and the Annapurna Sanctuary experience of ABC. Contact us for the combined itinerary.
Q: What permits do I need?
ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) — $30 and TIMS card — $20. Total $50. Both arranged by Global Nepal Treks and included in the package price.
Q: Is Mardi Himal good in spring or autumn?
Both are excellent for different reasons. April gives rhododendron blooms in the forest sections — the most spectacular floral display on any short Nepal trek. October gives crystal clear skies and the sharpest mountain views from the ridge. Both are outstanding choices.
